It was in 1938, at the request of Adolf Hitler who wanted a popular car ("Volks Wagen", the people's car), that Ferdinand Porsche created the Beetle, making it the very first... Porsche!
The war brought sales of the car to a halt, and the 350,000 Germans who had ordered their model in 1938 would not be delivered until 10 years later, in 1948, when the Volkswagen Beetle was officially launched. The "Cox" had survived this evil legacy to become a symbol of emancipation and democracy.
Economical and family‑friendly, the Beetle, like the first Porsches, was equipped with an air‑cooled 4‑cylinder flat engine, and would be available in numerous versions, including the Volkswagen Combi.
By 1955, the Volkswagen Beetle had sold a million units, beating the Ford T's record, and by 1973, with a total of 21 million units sold, it was the best‑selling car in the world. The last models rolled off the assembly line in 1979 in Mexico.
As early as 1949, a Beetle cabriolet version was launched, but it was in 1973 that the 1303 Cabriolet version came out, the most accomplished with its 50 hp engine. This is the version we offer with Janis, dating from 1973. Slightly removed from its original popular vocation, it soon became the symbol of the upper class in the '70s... nothing could be more chic in the '70s than cruising around Paris in a Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet...
